Book Review: See You at the Top by Zig Ziglar

I recently completed reading Zig Ziglar’s classic See You at the Top 395 pages over the course of about one month and eighteen days. This book is one of Ziglar’s most influential works, centered on personal growth, success principles, and self-motivation. As a neutral reader, I would like to highlight the lessons I learned and also share a few constructive reflections.

 Key Learnings from the Book

 1. Improve Self-Image

Zig Ziglar emphasized the importance of self-image. He explained that when we speak negatively about others, we gradually become negative ourselves. Therefore, to strengthen and improve self-image, he suggested following 15 essential rules. By practicing these principles, anyone can move towards greatness.

  1. Believe in yourself. God has gifted us health worth Rs. 100 crores.

  2. Believe in yourself. God has blessed us with a brain so valuable that if scientists attempted to build it, it would cost Rs. 8 lakh crores. Yet, no machine can create a single original thought like the human brain can. The brain was not given merely for relaxation but to be used. By applying it wisely, one can create wealth worth crores. Never bury your talent; practice it daily. If you can sing, write, or teach others, use those gifts to grow and earn.

  3. Read biographies of great personalities.

  4. Listen to the experiences and teachings of great people.

  5. Take small steps every day. Small consistent efforts lead to big achievements.

  6. Stay happy and always wear a smile.

  7. Help the helpless without expecting profit.

  8. Avoid negative people and negative influences.

  9. Make a list of your strengths.

  10. Maintain a record of your achievements to remind yourself of your progress.

  11. Do not indulge in lustful or immoral distractions.

  12. Learn from the failures of successful people.

  13. Develop public speaking skills and practice presenting yourself confidently in public.

  14. Learn to look into your own eyes with honesty, and into the eyes of others with confidence.

  15. Exercise daily to maintain health and energy.

 2. Make Big Goals

Ziglar strongly believes that without goals, life loses direction and balance.

Why Goals Are Important

  1. Goals give direction to reach your destination.

  2. They help maintain focus and energy.

  3. A human being is like a cycle — without moving forward toward a goal, balance is lost.

  4. With goals, every day you progress step by step.

  5. Goals help channel your full energy and power.

Qualities of a Goal

  1. A goal must be big because you will always remain equal to your goal.

     * Example: Selling small iron earns \$1.

     * Selling iron rods earns \$50.

     * Manufacturing and selling steel earns \$250,000.

     * The bigger the goal, the bigger you become.

  2. If you achieve something big, it’s because God believed your goal was worthy, and you sacrificed for it.

  3. If you receive something small, ask yourself — was your past goal too small? God fulfills genuine **needs**, not mere desires.

3. Build the Right Attitude

According to Ziglar, emotion is more powerful than logic. Attitude shapes destiny:

Examples

  1. A person can be carried away by emotions and either gain or lose wealth.

  2. If you give up emotionally, you risk losing your hard-earned income.

Principles of Positive Attitude

  1. Courage is an attitude.

   2. Adopt the attitude of giving, even when others are negative.

  2. Don’t let other people’s frustrations disturb your peace.

3. Seeds of Attitude

  * *Sow a work with positive attitude → reap a habit.*

  * *Sow a habit → reap character.*

  * *Sow character → reap destiny.*

Be Careful of Bad Habits

  * Lustful addictions

  * Abusive language

  * Alcohol

  * Smoking

  * Gambling

Ziglar’s message is clear: *Feed your brain with positivity, because habits ultimately decide destiny.*

4. Take Consistent Action

No principle works unless you act upon it. Ziglar reminds us that:

1. A parachute works only when opened.

2. A mobile phone works only when switched on.

3. No success formula works unless acted upon.

Action Principles

  1.    Face problems directly — they disappear when confronted.
  2.    A gambler, if he leaves his addiction and works hard, can achieve what he never could through gambling.
  3.    Beware of the “free lunch” mindset — greed blocks the use of talent and prevents big dreams.
  4.    Hard work sharpens us like a knife sharpened against stone, not in comfort.
  5.    Like water from a tap, money flows only when you keep turning the handle — consistent action creates consistent results.

5. Develop Burning Desire

Talent without desire remains dormant. Ziglar insists that burning desire is the true fuel of success:

1. If you truly desire to win, you will win.

2. Desire pushes talent to its highest level.

3. Henry Ford never accepted the word *impossible*. His belief, I can, made him a winner.

4. If you say *you can*, you can. If you say *you can’t*, you won’t.

5. Many people grow in difficulties because their burning desire refuses to let them give up.

 Critical Reflections

While the book is motivating, I found two aspects worth reconsidering:

1. Use of Non-Vegetarian Examples

Ziglar frequently uses meat, chicken, or non-veg examples. From an Indian perspective, this feels inappropriate. True success starts with good health, and vegetarian living is healthier for body and mind. Readers must replace such references with vegetarian alternatives like milk, grains, or fruits by black the mark and hand written veg. food on it.

2. Capitalism vs. Communism Debate

The book promotes capitalism while criticizing communism. While financial freedom is important, Indian philosophy promotes a trusteeship model

  1.  All natural resources belong to God.
  2.  Humans are trustees, not owners.
  3.  We should use what we need and share the excess.

This approach avoids both the ego and blind competition of capitalism, and the dictatorship tendencies of communism. It is the most balanced and sustainable way forward.

Final Message

See You at the Top is a timeless motivational classic. Its lessons on self-image, big goals, positive attitude, action, and burning desire are life-changing. At the same time, cultural adaptation is necessary — prioritizing health, vegetarian values, and a trusteeship model of wealth.
